Pregnancy-Related Care

Pregnancy brings rapid and significant changes to the body. As your posture, centre of gravity, joint mobility, and muscular demands shift, it’s common to experience discomfort or pain — even in otherwise healthy, active individuals. At Coast Therapy, we support individuals through pregnancy and post-partum with a interdisciplinary team that includes Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, and Registered Massage Therapists who have additional training in pregnancy-specific care. This allows us to better understand the unique physical demands of pregnancy and tailor support accordingly.

Common Pregnancy-Related Signs & Symptoms

Pregnancy-related concerns can vary widely and may change from trimester to trimester. Common symptoms include:

Spine & Pelvic Symptoms

  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic girdle pain
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint discomfort
  • Pubic symphysis pain
  • Tailbone pain

Hip, Rib & Postural Symptoms

  • Hip or groin discomfort
  • Rib or mid-back pain
  • Increased postural fatigue
  • Muscle tightness due to altered alignment

Pelvic Floor & Post-Natal Symptoms

  • Pelvic pressure or heaviness
  • Discomfort with walking, standing, or transitions
  • Post-partum pelvic pain
  • Scar sensitivity or tension following delivery

Symptoms may be intermittent, activity-related, or persistent — and what feels “normal” can be difficult to interpret during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Related Pain

Why Pregnancy-Related Pain Is Unique

Pregnancy-related pain is influenced by more than just one structure or system. Contributing factors may include:

  • Hormonal changes affecting joint stability
  • Shifts in posture and movement patterns
  • Increased load on the pelvis and spine
  • Changes in breathing mechanics
  • Prior injuries or pre-existing conditions
  • Sleep disruption and fatigue

Because of this, pregnancy-related pain often benefits from care providers who understand both musculoskeletal health and the physiological changes of pregnancy.

When to Seek Support

You may want to seek professional support if you are experiencing:

  • Pain that affects daily comfort or sleep
  • Difficulty walking, standing, or changing positions
  • Worsening pelvic or back pain as pregnancy progresses
  • Ongoing pain following delivery
  • Uncertainty about what is normal vs. what needs attention

Early education and guidance can help prevent symptoms from becoming more limiting over time.

Pregnancy-Informed Care at Coast Therapy

At Coast Therapy, several members of our team have additional education and experience working with pregnant and post-partum individuals. This means:

  • Greater awareness of pregnancy-specific considerations
  • Thoughtful assessment of changing biomechanics
  • Care that adapts across different stages of pregnancy
  • Support that considers both comfort and function

Because every pregnancy is different, we don’t prescribe a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, our team works collaboratively to help you understand your symptoms and explore care options that feel right for you.
