Active Release Technique (ART)

Specialized soft tissue therapy for overuse injuries and pain relief

Effective treatment for muscle strains, tendonitis, and nerve entrapment

Active Release Technique®, or ART, is a hands-on technique used to address soft tissue injuries involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. It targets overused muscles andleg treatment other soft tissues to facilitate healing and optimize their functions.

Active Release Technique

Overused muscles, tendons and ligaments can change in three ways:

  1. In acute situations, they can get strained or sprained (ex. muscle pull)
  2. They can accumulate small tears through micro-traumas
  3. They can get hypoxic if not receiving enough oxygen

Each situation is unique but can create underlying inflammation in the soft tissue structures, forming scar tissue that causes muscles to become short and tight or lengthened and inhibited. This can result in reduced range of motion, weakness and pain. In addition, nerves can also become trapped, manifesting as feelings of tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Common conditions addressed with ART treatment include:

  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Tendonitis
  • Frozen shoulder or rotator cuff injuries
  • Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Nerve entrapment syndromes

ART is a typical treatment style used by athletes, but it can be highly beneficial to anyone with musculoskeletal pains related to posture, repetitive movements or acute traumatic injuries.
