Gua Sha (Scraping Therapy)

Gua Sha is a manual therapy technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin.

Why It’s Used
  • Reduces muscle and fascial tension
  • Improves local circulation
  • Supports recovery in areas of chronic restriction

Temporary redness or light bruising is normal and typically resolves within a few days. Gua Sha is commonly used for neck, shoulder, and back tension, as well as chronic pain patterns.

What is GuaSha?

GuaSha is a therapeutic scraping technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves using a smooth-edged tool, often made of jade or stainless steel, to gently scrape the skin. This motion helps stimulate blood flow, promote lymphatic drainage, and break down adhesions in the connective tissues. The practice has been used for centuries to address chronic pain, inflammation, and immune imbalances.

How It Works:

By creating a controlled inflammatory response in the superficial layers of the skin, GuaSha promotes local healing, clears stagnant fluids, and activates the immune system. The scraping creates visible, temporary red or purple markings (called “sha”) which indicate the release of stagnation and metabolic waste. These markings typically fade within 3–5 days.

Therapeutic Benefits:

  • Breaks Up Stagnation: Facilitates movement of stagnant blood, lymph, and metabolic by-products that can cause pain and dysfunction.
  • Fascia Release: Reduces fascial tension and adhesions, improving tissue mobility and range of motion.
  • Stimulates Immune Response: Enhances the body’s natural defenses by stimulating the immune system and increasing white blood cell production.
  • Reduces Inflammation: Activates anti-inflammatory processes and helps with chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • Improves Circulation: Increases local blood flow, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissues while promoting detoxification.

Conditions Commonly Treated with GuaSha:

  • Chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Respiratory issues (e.g., asthma, colds)
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Immune weakness

What to Expect:

A GuaSha session may be integrated into your acupuncture treatment. It is generally not painful, though the scraping may feel intense in areas of muscle tightness. The resulting skin discoloration is not bruising but rather a diagnostic and therapeutic indication of stagnation being released.

Is GuaSha Safe?

Yes. GuaSha is non-invasive and safe for most individuals. It is not performed over broken skin, inflamed areas, or in clients with clotting disorders unless specifically cleared. Our practitioners ensure the technique is performed safely and comfortably.

Enhancing Other Therapies:

GuaSha is particularly effective when used in combination with acupuncture, cupping, or deep tissue massage. It often prepares the tissue for needling or cupping by reducing superficial tension and increasing responsiveness of the tissue layers.
